Happy New Year!!
2016 was a tough year in many respects. Absolutely there were wonderful things that happened — but it was also a year packed with turmoil & sadness.
As a response, both a personal effort & a service to the community, Temria Airmet of Myriad Dance Company created a modern dance & music-filled performance.
Offering LIGHTS and Hope for the New Year
The Downtown Artist Collective of Salt Lake City was a fascinating choice to stage the show. A long room with mirrors, brick & industrial construction, and artistic creations by local artists, it was already interesting on its own.
To prepare the location for the LIGHTS performance, the Myriad performers filled the sides of the room with lamps.
LIGHTS felt like a combination of vigil and inspiration. The night included Temria’s powerful spoken-word performances bookending the show, dance, live music with dance performances, and live singing.
The choreography featured themes of struggling to unite, with the repetition of the performers clasping hands, especially at the end of pieces — no matter how fiercely different they were, or how focused on their own dance.
This year has been a whirlwind of events; many of them violent, depressing, and heartbreaking. It is at these moments when we need to care for each other and celebrate each other the most. …
We believe that clarity and peace can be found in our service towards one another.
… May your year end in beauty, safety, happiness, and light.
The LIGHTS performance raised funds for the Volunteers of America Utah chapter, raising money for homeless teens in these freezing months.
The Myriad Dance company performers included Temria Airmet, Kendall Fischer, Ashley Creek, Charity Wilcox, Alyx Pitkin, and Sierra Stauffer. Featured artists included Jo Brady, Zachary Creek, Joseph Chang, Monty Dillon, and Mariah Tow.
Well done, all!
